The Department of Transport is now seeking persons qualified as Marine Engineers (STCW 1978 Reg. III/2) to work as Engineer & Ship Surveyors in the Marine Survey Office (MSO).

Marine Survey Office The MSO, a division within the Department of Transport, serves as the regulatory authority for maritime transport safety. Its role is to ensure the implementation of national and international legislation relating to the safety of life at sea, maritime security, living and working conditions and the prevention of pollution of the marine environment from ship related sources.
The Role
Reporting to the Chief Surveyor, Deputy Chief Surveyors and/or Surveyors-in-Charge, Engineer & Ship Surveyors form part of a team whose main responsibilities include enhancing safety of life at sea, maritime security, living and working conditions of those at sea and preventing pollution of the marine environment.
Engineer & Ship Surveyors are engaged in the initial survey and inspection requirements of vessels and the renewal survey requirements for existing vessels such as the issue or renewal of statutory certificates and registration on the Irish Flag. They are also involved in inspections of Irish and foreign vessels of different types.
In addition, they are also involved with conducting audits in connection with the International Safety Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention (or International and Domestic Safety Management System), Maritime Labour Convention, International Ship and Port Facility Security Code and auditing of companies, and maritime colleges, etc.

Vacancies and Location
There are currently a number of vacancies for the role of Engineer & Ship Surveyor. Candidates who are successful in this competition will be placed on a panel, in an order of merit. The MSO has locations in Dublin (Leeson Lane, Dublin 2), Cork (Cork City) and Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal.
Successful candidates will be based in the Dublin Office for an initial period of six months. At the end of this six-month period, candidates may be assigned to one of the other MSO locations as determined by the Chief Surveyor.
It is not expected that appointments will be made from this panel after October 2026.
