The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage hiring grade III Ecologists

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLGH) is responsible for housing and water, physical and spatial planning, local government, weather forecasting and for conserving and managing Ireland’s unique heritage for the benefit of present and future generations.


The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is primarily responsible for formulation and implementation of policy and legislation relating to nature conservation and biodiversity.

 
The Scientific Advice and Research (SAR) Directorate of the NPWS undertakes scientific surveys to provide quality baseline and monitoring data to underpin the Department's strategic direction, policy, designations, and the protection and management of habitats and species. It also sets conservation objectives and provides scientific advice to a range of stakeholders.


The Department has vacancies for:

• Ornithologists

• Marine Ecologists

• Ecohydrologists


Reporting to a Wildlife Inspector Grade II, these roles will include surveying, monitoring and research work programmes while working in conjunction with colleagues in the SAR Directorate and the wider Department.


Candidates must have:

• On or before 31st August 2023 a qualification in Zoology, Biology, Ecology, Plant Science, Environmental Science, Geoscience, Civil/Environmental Engineering or a related discipline at level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)

• Demonstrable knowledge and experience of the ecology of habitats and species found in Ireland

• Experience of field based environmental monitoring and scientific analysis of datasets

• Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
