About the ILV Granuaile

ILV Granuaile is a multifunctional vessel which primarily operates in the waters around the coast of the Island of Ireland. Its primary function is to place and service offshore buoys, which warn mariners of the location of sand banks, reefs and other offshore hazards near shipping routes.  The vessel also serves as a helicopter platform for servicing offshore lighthouses and is available to assist State agencies with search and rescue, emergency towing, oil pollution control, surveying and offshore data collection. Primary duties involve maintenance of Aids to Navigation. Over the ships 22 years in operation, she has successfully completed a wide range of offshore contracts including subsea operations. 

The Role

The Operational Maintenance Operative (Deck) reports to the Deck Supervisor and carries out duties on the  deck, bridge and boat work, together with work in the Engine Room, Accommodation and the Galley.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintenance of aids to navigation, including offshore stations and buoys and support for charter operations.
  • Mooring operations and watch keeping when the ship is in port at anchor or at underway.
  • Operating deck machinery including cranes, winches and workboats.
  • Cost effective/efficient use of resources and continuous monitoring of deck conditions.
  • Ensure deck and accommodation are maintained clean and tidy as directed by the Deck Supervisor.
  • Assisting other crew members with general maintenance tasks.
  • Taking part in fire-fighting exercises and drills and capable of being part of the fire-fighting team if required. Including donning fire suit and breathing apparatus.
  • Performing tasks as per the Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Safety Awareness: Being aware of conditions and circumstances affecting safety on-board.
  • Delivering on objectives agreed in the Annual Performance and Development System (PADS)

Qualifications*, Skills and Experience

  • STCW Able Seafarers Deck Certificate (or near to completion)
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft (CPSC) STCW-95
  • Previous experience on specialised vessels such as aids to navigation, offshore anchor handling or naval vessels will be an advantage
  • Evidence of working as a part of a team
  • Experience of working at heights is desirable  
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  • Elementary First Aid
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
  • Designated Security Duties
  • Seafarer Medical Certificate, together with a good level of physical fitness due to the duties involved in the role  
  • Full Driving licence  
  • Marlin test achieved of at least 80% (If English not first language)

*All certificates must be in date

Former Naval personnel and individuals from the fishing community/industry, with experience of small craft operations will also be considered, subject to eligibility to progress to STCW Able Seafarers Deck Certificate and achieving all relevant STCW certifications for the role.

Irish Lights provides a full induction and orientation to all new recruits to ensure they have all the skills and qualifications required to undertake the role.  

Salary

The annual salary for this role is €29,690 rising to €36,375 based on experience and service.  
Irish Lights is based in the Republic of Ireland and is subject to taxation and legislation in the jurisdiction.  

Hours of Work

The successful candidate will join one of two crews who operate a 4 week on/off roster on board the ILV Granuaile.  

Travel and Subsistence

Travel and subsistence expenses are paid to employees required to travel, in accordance with approved rates.
Please note that travel expenses for employees are only paid within the island of Ireland.
