Seaweed Assistant Hatchery Manager Position

Pure Ocean Algae is an expanding aquaculture-based Biotechnology company, developing high value products from macroalgae-based biomass.

To develop our aquaculture capabilities, we are looking to expand our hatchery team, to develop our current Palmaria palmata, land based and sea capabilities as well as expanding into the production of Kelps and Asparagopsis. We also engage in research and development that furthers the sustainable seaweed farming industry, and support policy initiatives that make commercial seaweed farming possible.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Pure Ocean Algae seeks a reliable, skilled, self-directed and team-oriented individual to fulfil our assistant Hatchery Manager position. Reporting to the Hatchery Manager, the assistant Hatchery Manager will:

  1. oversee seasonal facility operations in our multi species hatchery
  2. coordinate daily and weekly maintenance tasks and
  3. collaborate closely with the Hatchery manager to execute these tasks, among other critical functions.

This is a full-time position (from January 2022,) and will be based on the Beara peninsula in West Cork, Ireland.

Salary

Commensurate with experience but based on a scale starting at €40,000 per annum.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Execute Pure Ocean Algae’s hatchery protocols and procedures, including cleaning and fixing of various tanks systems, sanitizing hatchery equipment, and prepping kelp cultivation material for seeding and sea deployment.
  • Oversee hatchery facilities operations and maintenance
  • Oversee and maintain cultures under the direction of the Hatchery Manager
  • Lead a part-time Hatchery Technician to assist with hatchery upkeep
  • Document work in a daily logbook and spreadsheets
  • Collaborate with Hatchery Manager to develop sea deployment and kelp seeding schedules

Desired Skills and Requirements:

  • Collaborative
  • Willingness to learn new production systems
  • Attention to detail while not losing sight of the big picture
  • Great problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot and rapidly respond to maintenance issues as they arise
  • Familiarity and comfort with light construction, PVC plumbing, and use of power tools
  • 2 years’ experience, working in a seaweed hatchery.
  • Occasional travel required
  • Driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends, as needed and undertake any other duties, reasonably requested by the company.
