MIIN members, we are reaching out in relation to the WIN-BIG project (winbigproject.eu) with three exciting initiatives that may be of interest to you or your marine network.

WIN-BIG is dedicated to advancing gender equality in the blue economy by highlighting the contributions of women in marine-related sectors. If you are interested in being involved in any of these initiatives or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We would love to hear from you!

1. Calling Women Ocean Champions The WIN-BIG project has launched a call for Women Ocean Champions—inspirational women who have made a significant impact in the marine sector. The aim is to collect and share their stories in a published book, showcasing their achievements and inspiring future generations. The project is looking for women across various ocean-related fields, including fisheries, marine science, conservation, renewable energy, and coastal tourism. If you or someone you know has a compelling story, you are encouraged to submit it! Learn more about the call here: WIN-BIG Women Ocean Champions.

Additionally, the WIN-BIG project has been approached by a documentary producer interested in filming in Cork during European Maritime Day (EMD) this May for their Women from the Sea project.

2. About the Women from the Sea Project & Documentary This international project brings together women who have a deep connection with the sea—whether they are biologists, lighthouse keepers, seaweed harvesters, ship commanders, poets, painters, or ocean lovers. The project includes a documentary, a miniseries, a communication campaign, and a digital platform, aiming to create a legacy that highlights the fundamental role women play in ocean conservation.

More than 800 women have already joined this initiative, which has been recognised as part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). The project is now launching internationally with support from UNESCO. You can learn more and watch a short presentation film here: Women from the Sea Project.

3. Blue Economy Survey – Closing Soon! If you work in any marine-related sector, you are invited to participate in the WIN-BIG survey on gender issues in the blue economy. The survey is open to professionals across marine industries, including renewable energy, coastal tourism, fisheries, marine research, and more.

Your anonymous responses will provide valuable insights into gender-related challenges in the EU’s blue economy, helping to inform policymakers, academia, and civil society. The survey closes on April 7, 2025 – don’t miss your chance to contribute! Complete the survey here: WIN-BIG Survey.

If you are interested in being involved in any of these initiatives or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We would love to hear from you!
