Laboratory Analyst – Fisheries Assessment Analyst (Apply by Friday 8th September @ 12:00)
Castletownbere, Co. Cork | Temporary specified purpose contract for a maximum duration of up to 31st December 2027

Principal Tasks:

  • Sea time on board commercial vessels as part of the DCF / EUMAP) at-sea sampling programme.
  • Port sampling in Castletownbere (and other ports as required) of pelagic, demersal, nephrops and shellfish species to fulfil the EUMAP/DCF sampling targets.
  • Participate in a suite of research surveys at sea as required.
  • Arrange, collect and work up of nephrops samples from a variety of Functional Units in order to fulfil the DCF sampling targets with specific responsibility for the southwest coast sample coordination and sample collection.     
  • Data entry and quality control of data from a range of data sources, (e.g. Commercial Sampling events, At-sea sampling Data, Sentinel Vessel Programme data).
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fishermen, Co- Operatives and Fish Producers Organisations.
  • Participate in outreach events and meetings related to the fishing industry.
  • Act as a local contact point between the industry and the Marine Institute.
  • Day to day management of summer bursars and students.
  • Any other duties assigned from time to time, appropriate to the position.

Key Skills:

  • A minimum of a certificate in a relevant scientific or fisheries related subject.
  • Demonstrated ability to work at sea for extended periods of time on various types of vessels.
  • Familiarity with the Irish Fishing industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in the practical aspects of biological sampling of fish and shellfish.
  • The ability to meet the requirements of a sea going medical (ENGII) and mandatory sea going training.
  • A high level of computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet/Email).
  • Experience with data entry and quality control of scientific data.
  • A full clean driving licence and own transport.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally to different audiences including non-technical.

Salary: €37,009 - €62,105

Team Leader – Data Management (Apply by Friday 8th September @ 12:00)
Oranmore, Co. Galway | Contract of Indefinite Duration

Principal Tasks:

  • You will manage the Data Management team to develop data management practice and support data management service delivery within the Marine Institute, and externally with partner organisations. This will include overseeing how data are stored, data standards and interoperability, quality management and central data access and analysis services.
  • Working with the Team you will provide support to teams across the Institute to develop data management processes and practice including for oceanographic data, fisheries ecosystem, marine environment data, research and socio-economic data. 
  • You will drive the rollout and development of the Institute’s internationally accredited Data Management Quality Management Framework in conjunction with personnel across the Institute. • You will work with partner organisations to support the acquisition and integration of new types of data from a wide range of sources.
  • You will work closely with technical teams within IS&D and with scientific teams across the Marine Institute to continuously improve systems, tools and processes to manage and add value to our data and to deliver high-quality services, while ensuring cyber-security, data compliance and operational capabilities are part of how we operate.
  • You will work with the wider IS&D team to support the development of online data and information services for Institute service delivery, to ensure Marine Institute and 3rd party data are available for access and use, and to connect with national and international partners. Relevant services include the Marine Institute’s Data Catalogue, the Irish Spatial Data Exchange, Ireland’s Marine Atlas, Ireland’s Digital Ocean, data APIs, as well as reporting and decision support tools for different use cases.
  • With the Team you will manage and actively contribute to national and EU research projects in the marine data management and analytics area, and develop new project proposals to support internationally connectivity and new capability development.
  • You will keep a close eye on marine data and information policy e.g. Open Data, Data Governance, EU Digital Decade, Harnessing Digital and Connecting Government 2030, etc, and actively support national data and digital initiatives relevant to sustainable marine development.
  • In all of the above you will be supported by and work closely with the wider Information Services & Development team and with individuals working with data across the Institute.

Key Skills:

  • A degree in computer science, data analytics, or a relevant scientific or numerical discipline with a significant data or digital component.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience of implementing projects using enterprise database management solutions e.g. MS SQL Server or alternative.
  • Experience of working with a structured data or software development or operating process, with a focus on service delivery and technical change management.
  • Experience of developing data analysis or visualisation solutions such as developing dashboards, interactive 3D visualisations, etc.
  • Some experience of working with a formal project management process.
  • Some experience of leading other team members.
  • Proven collaboration skills including team working, working with distributed project teams and professional network development.
  • Some experience in the following:
    • Customer support and problem management
    • Business analysis and requirements gathering
    • Evaluation and definition of technical solutions
  • The ability to work unsupervised with demonstrated ability to use initiative.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally at all levels.

Castletownbere, Co. Cork | Temporary specified purpose contract for a maximum duration of up to 31st December 2027

Principal Tasks:

Post-Doctoral Research Scientist – Marine Biogeochemistry Essential Climate Variables (Apply by Tuesday 19th September @ 12:00)
Oranmore, Co. Galway | Temporary specified purpose contract for a maximum duration of up to 31st December 2027

Principal Tasks:

  • Set up, validate and operate new instrumentation and new methods for the climate-quality analysis of ECVs. In the first instance, this will involve carbonate parameters in seawater, i.e. dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TA) and spectrophotometric (pH). This task will entail method development, optimisation, validation and troubleshooting as necessary.                                                         
  •  Oversee and carry out high quality analysis of biogeochemical parameters, particularly carbonate system parameters (DIC, TA), but also dissolved nutrients, oxygen and salinity from seawater samples collected on surveys and from other platforms, and ensure the data collection (sampling/analysis) are fit for purpose.
  • Establish methods for high quality laboratory and/or field analysis of additional marine biogeochemistry parameters. These may include total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), other greenhouse gases, transient tracers, particulate and dissolved organic carbon, and particulate inorganic carbon.
  • Develop protocols to ensure all sampling, analysis and data management activities conform to best practices (e.g. GOSHIP and other guidelines), and develop operating procedures integrated into the MI quality system, where relevant.
  • Participate in proficiency testing schemes and inter-calibration exercises for ECVs, e.g. QUASIMEME. 
  • Contribute to the Marine Institute’s Quality System and develop and implement ISO17025 procedures and best quality practices in relation to the above work.
  • Contribute to the ongoing operation and maintenance of the Marine Institute fixed mooring site at Mace Head, Co. Galway by, for example, collecting and analysing samples in order to verify and calibrate sensor measurements.
  • Lab management tasks: oversee the day-to-day management of chemical oceanography laboratories; participate in laboratory management group; upkeep, maintenance and service of laboratory equipment; procurement of laboratory consumables, etc. 
  • Coordinate and participate in the annual Winter Environmental Survey, Annual Rockall Ocean Climate Survey and other surveys (as may be relevant) and coordinate biogeochemical sampling, analysis and data collection activities.
  • Provide analytical support for MI projects and activities requiring ECV measurements, for example, development of sentinel marine climate sites; calibration of underway CO2 systems.
  •  Assist in developing observing capacity through use of new technology.
  • Ensure data are properly managed, available publicly and reported to key data centres (e.g. UN SDG 14.3.1, ICES, GLODAP, MSFD).
  • Contribute to assessments of the marine environment and the preparation of reports and scientific publications.
  • Participate in research activities/projects and identify strategically aligned opportunities and partnerships.
  • Participate in internal MI meetings.
  • Liaise with relevant organisations as appropriate.
  • Any other duties as may be required from time to time.

Key Skills:

  • A BSc. (Hons) and PhD in chemistry, marine or environmental science, oceanography, environmental engineering or similar related discipline.
  • A minimum of three years’ relevant work experience in an analytical laboratory, ideally with familiarity in the chemical analysis of environmental matrices such as seawater.
  • Good knowledge of chemistry.
  • Excellent working knowledge of modern analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience of developing/validating/optimising/troubleshooting analytical methods.
  • Strong experience of implementing and maintaining quality standards in a laboratory environment to ensure results are fit for purpose.
  • Willingness to complete both field-based and work at sea on board research vessels.
  • Experience in the use of standard Microsoft Office software packages.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • The ability to manage time effectively, work in an organised manner and work to deadlines.

Salary: €42,033 - €48,427
