The Marine Institute are currently recruiting for the role of Laboratory Analyst (4 vacancies).
Laboratory Analyst – in support of MSFD & OSPAR implementation
Oranmore, Galway | Temporary Specified Purpose Contract – Up to 31st December 2023

Summary of the Role:
The successful candidate will work within a team delivering scientific services relating to ocean health and pollution as a pressure on the marine environment, in support of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLGH). This work supports the development of measures to protect the marine environment as required by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and OSPAR Convention.Â
Educational and Professional Requirements:
- A minimum of a certificate (third level) in a relevant Science subject or an equivalent qualification.Â
- Relevant work experience in an analytical laboratory, ideally with familiarity in the chemical analysis of environmental matrices.
- Demonstrated experience of basic laboratory skills.
- Excellent working knowledge of modern analytical instrumentation.
- Proven scientific & technical report writing skills.
- Willingness to complete both field-based and work at sea on board research vessels and be sufficiently fit to pass an ENG II/Seafarers medical and related training
- Experience in the use of standard Microsoft Office software packages.
- The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- The ability to manage time effectively, work in an organised manner and work to deadlines.

Laboratory Analyst – Fisheries Assessment Analyst (2 vacancies)
Castletownbere, Co. Cork | Temporary Specified Purpose Contract – Up to 31st December 2027

Summary of the Role:
The Fisheries Assessment Analyst (LA) will work closely with the Analyst team and the Industry Liaison Team Leader on data delivery to our main client DAFM (Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine) and ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Seas) in relation to provision of data for fish stock assessment and advice. Â The job will focus on fisheries data collection, both on land (in co-ops and processors) and at sea (on board commercial and research vessels). The role will also include the collation, data entry and validation of this data.
Educational and Professional Requirements:
- A minimum of a certificate in a relevant scientific or fisheries related subject.
- Demonstrated ability to work at sea for extended periods of time on various types of vessels.
- Familiarity with the Irish Fishing industry.
- Demonstrated experience in the practical aspects of biological sampling of fish and shellfish.
- The ability to meet the requirements of a sea going medical (ENGII) and mandatory sea going training.
- A high level of computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet/Email).
- Experience with data entry and quality control of scientific data.
- A full clean driving licence and own transport.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally to different audiences including non-technical.
