Nua na Mara, Marine Innovation Development Centre and HATCH (Venture Capital Company that supports early stage Aquatech companies and research) are hosting an information session on the Marine Industry on Thursday 24th February 2022 at 10.30am facilitated by GMIT’s iHubs.
This event will showcase the supports, funding, and information available to start ups and researchers with business ideas related to or that can be applied to the marine sector. We will be discussing the economic value of the marine sector, current developments and where we see the blue future. These topics, combined with an overview of the supports and opportunities available from Nua na Mara, HATCH, and an overview of activities in Marine Institute is assured to give budding entrepreneurs an insight into the blue market.
The presentation is followed by an opportunity to have a preliminary conversation or to ask any questions about starting your business journey with the MIDC/HATCH. This function will be facilitated through a booking system provided by iHub.

About Us
Nua na Mara: supporting enterprises to bridge the gap- linking innovation, application, and concepts, through commercialisation.
Nua na Mara, a Marine Innovation Development centre is an enterprise founded by Údarás na Gealtacha and funded by Enterprise Ireland, and is an entity dedicated to supporting marine start-ups & SME’s and driving innovation within existing SME’s. Situated on the west coast of Ireland, MIDC will leverage their connections within the marine industry here in Ireland and further afield to help marine start-ups to bridge the gap in linking innovation, application, concepts, and commercialisation.
Nua na Mara gives access to the word class research, testing and enterprise development facilities for the marine sector provided by GMIT and NUI Galway. Nua na Mara aims to support and nurture SME’s and start-ups with supports such as training and development, access to funding and grant aid, access to facilities, and acts as a gateway to key stakeholders in the marine Industry nationally and internationally.
The future for Nua na Mara and its clients is bright: Nua na Mara is a key element of Páirc Na Mara, a proposed dedicated marine business park with specialised marine facilities. The intended facilities will provide 1,800 sq. metres. of enterprise and incubation space for marine enterprises with state-of-the-art services such as office areas, conference facilities, prototype development suite, training hub, and direct access to the many businesses that will be on the Páirc Na Mara site.
HATCH: A Global Catalyst For Aquaculture And Alternative Seafood Innovation.
HATCH has been conceived in late 2017 by co-founders Carsten Krome, Georg Baunach and Wayne Murphy.
Our vision is to achieve the least-possible footprint of farmed and alternative seafood. For the benefit of the oceans, terrestrial ecosystems and future generations.
After two years in operation, HATCH has invested in more than 30 companies, run three successful cohorts, raised its first US $8M fund and established offices in Hawaii, Norway and Singapore. The team has grown to 10 full-time members spread across the globe, who run the three business units of Hatch – our accelerator program, our fund and our innovation services offering.
Marine Institute
The Marine Institute is a State agency in Ireland that provides government, public agencies and the maritime industry with a range of scientific, advisory and economic development services, aiming to inform policy-making, regulation and the sustainable management and growth of the country’s marine resources

Business Development Manager Nua na Mara, Marine Innovation Development Centre, Páirc na Mara
Cliodhna started her career with a passion for the Irish food industry and business. Cliodhna worked in various roles in new product development within the Irish food industry, progressing to project management roles within the market research industry focused on Food, Beverages and FMCG on a global scale. After a master’s from UCC in Food Marketing, Cliodhna began her career in the public sector working with companies in the aquaculture industry through EU funded project SW Grow with Údarás na Gaeltachta. After a couple years supporting SME’S within the sector, Cliodhna has recently been appointed as Business development manager for the Nua na Mara, Marine Innovation Development Centre. Her role within the MIDC is to support and develop early-stage companies and start-ups within the marine sector, focusing primarily on Blue Technology, Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals, Value added products and Aquaculture.
Ireland Aquaculture Community Manager, HATCH
Niall is a marine Biologist with an extensive background in the shellfish aquaculture industry, in addition to his shellfish industry experience, Niall was an auditor of the Aquaculture Industry in the UK for 6 years.
Niall is the Ireland Aquaculture Community Manager for HATCH. The purpose of his role is to help foster an aquaculture innovation ecosystem and increase innovation capacity of the aquaculture industry in Ireland.
Niall has over 13 years’ experience working in the Aquaculture Industry in both the private and public sectors across Australia, Indonesia, the UK and Ireland. Niall is passionate about sustainable aquaculture and promoting Ireland’s industry as a global player.
Niall holds a BSc in Applied Ecology from University College Cork, Ireland and a Hdip in Management and Leadership from the College of Management and IT, Ireland.
Post doc researcher, Marine Institute
Jamie has worked in the aquaculture and aquarium industry for over 10 years concentrating on the husbandry and welfare of a variety of both marine and freshwater species. He is currently working on the SALMSON smolt project (EMFF) which is looking at incorporating the use of Re‐circulation Aquaculture Systems for the production of larger Atlantic salmon smolt in Ireland. During this project he has developed Ireland first RAS hatchery for Atlantic salmon smolt at the Marine Institute Newport. He is also involved in a number of other projects including HYDROfish (Enterprise Ireland, Disruptive technology fund) which is looking at the inclusion of fish protein Hydrolysate in fish feed and INEVAL (www.bluebioeconomy.eu) which aim to diversify and increase echinoderm food value chains.
He has a master’s in marine biology (UCC) and a PhD from the Marine and Freshwater research centre in Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology, which was completed in conjunction with the Fish Health Unit, Marine Institute focus on Gill diseases in Finfish aquaculture with emphasis on Amoebic gill disease.
