This hybrid event is hosted by the Energy, Environment and Climate Action division, in association with the West region at the University of Galway. In this event, Shane Heverin, master mariner, will outline the key role played by Mariners in the construction and operations of the Offshore Wind assets. No booking is required for in person attendance but those wishing to join online must register using the link provided.

In the presentation Shane will focus on the following stages:

  • Role and expertise of the Master Mariner
  • Surveying and other pre-approval works
  • Construction Planning
  • Offshore Construction
  • Supporting Offshore Wind Farm Operations
  • Decommissioning


This event will be of particular interest to those who participate in any stages of the Offshore Wind Farm Lifecycle and will give a mariner’s perspective on the planning, delivery and operations of these key assets.

About the speaker
Shane Heverin is a highly experienced master mariner with a long and successful career working in the maritime industry. He qualified with a BSc in Nautical Science from NMCI.  He held master mariner roles with Farstad Shipping and Solstad Offshore, leaders in offshore construction.  He is currently Managing Director of Cara Offshore, an Irish-based Marine Operations Consultancy, advising and operating on projects across Europe.  His specialist skills include Dynamic Positioning, Marine Operations, Offshore Energy Construction (Oil & Gas, Renewable and Decommissioning) and Tankers
