Marine Identity: The Sea Between Us

Join the Irish Ocean Literacy Network as we explore the sea between Ballycastle, Rathlin Island and Scotland — a sea that has never simply been a boundary, but a route, a bridge and a meeting place. For generations, it has carried people, language, traditions, wildlife and ideas between communities, creating a rich shared maritime heritage that continues to connect us today.

This event brings together voices from across the marine and maritime sectors including arts, heritage, grassroots groups, research, NGOs, industry and tourism, to explore our common 'Marine Identity' and strengthen ocean literacy in practice and policy.

The Sea of Moyle has long connected communities in Ballycastle, Rathlin Island, and Scotland, carrying stories, language, traditions, wildlife and people across the water.

On Thursday, 1 October, our next Shared Island and Ocean Regional Meeting will explore those connections through two conversations:

Panel 1: Across the Moyle — Myths, Memories and Maritime Connections. Exploring the stories, memories and traditions carried across the sea.

Panel 2: Living with the Sea — Communities, Conservation and Ocean Futures. Looking at how communities are living with, caring for and finding new opportunities in the ocean today.
