How do we best adapt science and advice to support fisheries management in the context of changing ecosystems?
In spring 2026, the European Commission published an evaluation of the European Common Fisheries Policy, which reported mixed results in sustainability and economic gains. The evaluation will inform the Commission's 2040 Vision for Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Outside the EU, 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, the United States' primary fishery management legislation. These policies interact with a variety of measures, including marine spatial planning and nature restoration, which will generate new data, science, and advisory needs.
Are ICES science, data, and advice ready for the coming challenges?
In 2027, ICES will celebrate its 125th Anniversary and publish a new ICES Strategy and supporting plans. In the context of this time of reflection, evaluation, and action, we invite ICES and the wider marine community to provide input on knowledge gaps, new innovations, and ideas to strengthen ICES ability to respond to current and future challenges.
While this event focuses on how fisheries science and advice must evolve to support future management needs, we hope it will encourage a broader conversation on how we can most effectively produce the knowledge and advice needed to manage marine resources, including but not limited to fisheries.
To achieve this, this event will feed into the Plenary keynote roundtable that follows at 12:00, as well as the evening Network Session focused on future-proofing ICES Science and Advice.
